In response to the assignment of creating a self-portrait in Photoshop, I created an image of myself as the three major roles I serve in my life: wife, daughter, and artist/teacher. It is necessary for me to address the project on these three levels because these roles define who I am as a person and what I value- they are inseparable aspects of my identity. I also feel that this notion of bearing many titles (daughter, wife, etc.) lends itself to the application of layers in Photoshop. Photoshop allowed me to merge images and ideas of self that are not apparent in any one photograph. As this is a self-defining endeavor, my primary audience is myself, although I shared the image with my husband and classmates (for critique). I anticipate assigning a self-portrait project in Photoshop with my future students.
