PROJECT STATEMENT

I completed two Photoshop projects to fulfill my proposal objectives.  My original idea was to use images and text to express something about me.  To that end, I chose several tree photographs taken with a 35mm and a digital camera.  Trees have always been significant to me.  Their shape, the bark detail, and the template of their branches as seen through gradated skies move me.  I see trees also as an allegory for continuity in life.  I scanned and manipulated these images, printing them onto iron-on transfers.  Then, I ironed them onto a pillowcase.

I then chose some of the lyrics from Nick Drakes song, Northern Sky to add to the work.  Drake sings as if he were a tree personified-referring to the people that have blown through his branches and his new love-the one that brightens his Northern Sky- what a song! After placing the text down, I began to connect the images using branch-like drawings.  The final step was to add colors that complemented the images.

Northern Sky

 By Nick Drake

I never felt magic crazy as this

I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea

I never held emotion in the palm of my hand

Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree

But now you're here

Brighten my northern sky.

I've been a long time that I'm waiting

Been a long that I'm blown

I've been a long time that I've wandered

Through the people I have known

Oh, if you would and you could

Straighten my new mind's eye.

Would you love me for my money?

Would you love me for my head?

Would you love me through the winter?

Would you love me 'til I'm dead?

Oh, if you would and you could

Come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this

I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea

I never held emotion in the palm of my hand

Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree

But now you're here

   Brighten my northern sky.
